Sylvia Ross had spent the greater part of Tuesday trying to devise a strategy for approaching the two gentlemen whom everyone referred to as Seb and Chas. She had of course been introduced to them the day of her arrival, and she recalled with a twinge of mingled amusement and embarrassment how she had assumed, because of the way they had openly stared at Lily, that they had both been attracted by her. After Lily’s explanation of why this was unlikely she had thought no more about it, but the previous night, just as she was dropping off to sleep, it occurred to her to wonder what other reason there might have been for their interest. She tried to recall the moment when she had observed them with their eyes fixed on Lily, who – like her – had only recently arrived at Framleigh House. They had exchanged glances and whispers; on reflection it struck her as being the way people might react if they thought they recognised someone but were unsure. Whatever conclusions they had come to, so far as Sylvia was aware they had not spoken to Lily. Being such an open, confiding sort of woman, Sylvia reasoned, she would surely have mentioned it if they had. The possibility she had mentioned to Angela Fuller – that Lily might be ‘covering up for someone’ – came back to her mind with a rush. Was it possible that Seb and Chas had known Flavia Selwyn-Tuck years ago? Perhaps they had been among those who, according to Lily, had had their lives blighted by something Flavia had done. For Sylvia did not share her daughter’s doubts that it was Flavia who had been the subject of that conversation in the garden.
She awoke later than usual the following morning and was the last to reach the dining-room for breakfast. There were empty places at only two tables. At one, Laurence Dainton and Angela Fuller appeared to be deep in conversation; at the other, Seb and Chas were eating toast and marmalade while scanning what looked like a tabloid newspaper propped against the coffee pot in front of them. Neither pair had noticed Sylvia, who hesitated for a moment before deciding that the opportunity was too good to miss. She approached Seb and Chas and said shyly, ‘Do you mind if I sit at your table? I won’t interrupt if you want to read your paper.’
‘It will be a pleasure to have your company,’ said Chas, with a gesture of welcome towards the empty chair.
‘Thank you so much. I’m usually one of the early birds, but I overslept this morning,’ Sylvia explained as she sat down. Tracy appeared at her elbow with a pencil poised over her order pad. ‘I’ll have cornflakes and then scrambled eggs with wholemeal toast and coffee, please, and a glass of orange juice. If you want to go on reading, don’t mind me,’ she said to the two men as Tracy bustled off.
‘We wouldn’t dream of being
